Pretend City- A New Children’s Museum in Irvine

I had the opportunity to take a sneak peek at Pretend City, a new and AMAZING Children’s Museum that will be opening to the public on August 30. Pretend City is a place where Imagination and Education come to Play! Your kiddos are going to love everything about Pretend City.

Pretend City Children’s Museum is an interconnected city designed for children ranging from infant to eight years old and their families. The city is comprised of a grocery store, farm, doctor’s offices, art studio, amphitheater, beach, marina, construction site, cafe and much much more. Children will learn through role-play based on real world exhibits as they dress up as a police officer, deliver the mail, create art or put out a fire.

What I love about the museum is that all of the exhibits are connected and every exhibit is hands on. Pretend City is a unique museum and I have seen nothing quite like it. Your kids are going to love it! I can’t rave about this place enough! I can guarantee that your kiddos will have an incredible time at Pretend City. For additional information head over here. I’m planning on buying a membership and trying to make a visit at least once a week. I hope you can all go out and enjoy this amazing place with your family.

This looks so fun but I'm just not too sure about it. I went to the discovery science center last week and their pretend areas were total kaos…
It will be neat to see how it's organized when it's filled with kiddos.

thanks to your recommendation, i checked it out last week and my litlte girl LOVED it. i was so impressed with the place! there really is no museum quite like it. i'm thinking about getting a membership too! (but it's a bit on the pricey side)

nice concept, kids had fun, but I agree, it's pricey.

We were planning to have a birthday party here, but after our experience(s), checking out the place and asking several questions, we changed our mind.

First of all, we had called and left messages several times, even e-mailed and did not receive a response either by phone or e-mail! We were disappointed at the fact that they just opened up to the public just shy of a month (Aug. 30th) and they are horrible with following up with people that were seriously interested in checking out the place. Oh, and forget trying to get to speak to a live person, when you call! You get a recording when you call the main number and if you press 0 (zero), usually you get connected to a live person/operator…but not at Pretend City…you get caught up in a never-ending loop of the same recording and/or have a chance to leave a message in the "general mailbox." (don't bother to leave a message here either, we don't think anyone checks it, or if they do, they don't/won't follow-up with you).

Since we weren't getting a repsonse from the person responsible for booking parties (or even to check if there was an availability), we decided to make the drive down to the place (which is 50 miles away for us – most of our family/friends is in the OC area). The staff wasn't very friendly/welcoming/inviting at all! (and we were there during the "non-peak" time)

Party rooms looked nice and clean, when I asked what kind of food can be brought to the party, we were told that you can only bring cake and maybe a veggie/fruit platter…what!?! A birthday party around lunch time, but can only have cake and MAYBE veggies/fruits!?! Don't kids usually want to eat something, like pizza, sandwiches, chips, etc. at kids birthday parties??? (my kids do).

Okay, actual "play-time" in the museum takes an average kid about 2-2.5 hours to get through everything and have fun. If/when you book the party with them, they would get a little over an hour to play in the museum, and then you and your guests have to leave, unless you want to pay $10 more per adult(more than you've already forked out), so that your guests can enjoy the museum for the rest of the day. You have to use/surrender the "return pass for all party children" for the kids to enjoy the museum for the rest of that day.

I can go on and on, but I won't…See for yourselves…I hope that you'll have a better experience than we did. Were are very disappointed and are very sorry that it just won't be working out for us. Like I said, they've got a good concept, but someone needed to do a little bit more research on the "birthday party" aspect of the whole thing. All in all, WAY TOO PRICEY for what you get (or lack thereof).

    Good Luck…

Overall I was disappointed. With all the hype and 10+ years to get their act together I say skip it. Let's support organizations that have their acts together.

My boys love it. They are 4 and 7 years old and I have trouble getting them to leave. The staff and volunteers are very friendly and engaged my kids in activities to help them explore other areas of the museum. We have a membership and the members only hour starting at 9am is great. Not as busy and worth the price of membership.

Adorable but waaaaaayy overpriced. You even have to pay for babies to enter!! I have 3 little ones and if my mother in law wasn't the one paying, there's no way we could afford to go. It's a cute concept but there are similar places in OC that aren't nearly as costly.
