Asking for a Hotel Upgrade and Getting It!!

I shared a little bit about our stay at the Pacific Edge Hotel, in Laguna Beach a few weeks ago.  Last year, I bought a deal on one of the deal sites for a one-night stay at the Pacific Edge, for a really good rate. I was waiting for a good time to use it. This year we stayed home for Spring Break and decided that it was the perfect time to put our coupon in use. We called, booked our reservation, and made our way to the hotel.  When we arrived at the check in station, I decided to try my luck and ask for an upgrade. I was in luck, because they had a junior oceanfront suite! Score!

We were in for quite the treat. Our room was oceanfront and with a view that seemed to go on for miles.  Asking for an upgrade was so worth it. The kids had a blast playing in the sand/water, and I enjoyed falling asleep to the sounds of waves crashing.

Here are some tips that I’ve learned from staying at quite a few different hotels and almost every time being upgraded to a nicer room.

First and foremost is do not be afraid to ask. Asking is key! I usually ask how much it would cost to change to a different room than the one reserved.  Sometimes you have to pay for the upgrade and sometimes it is free of charge, especially if you have a history at the hotel. It all depends on availability and the hotel.

You can sometimes get a great deal on travel websites, but I’ve found (especially on last minute bookings) that calling the hotel directly can save you a LOT, and get you that upgraded room for the cost of a standard room! We decided to take a last minute road trip up the coast last year, and did not have any reservations in place. We decided to call in to the actual direct hotel line and saved hundreds of dollars. We also were able to get little extras like breakfast and were upgraded to a deluxe room with a view, at no extra cost.

Lastly, make sure that you join hotel loyalty programs. We are members of the major hotel chains reward programs and have received quite a few perks from our memberships. They also make upgrades easier. Usually we can have breakfast included or valet /Internet fees waived. You also are able to receive a later checkout time at no extra cost. Memberships are usually free and definitely have some great perks.

With summer and vacation season coming up, do not be afraid to try out one of the suggestions. After all, it doesn’t hurt to ask!
