What to do this Summer Series: Backyard Campout

Did you know that June 25th is National Backyard Campout Day?  This summer we have decided as a family to get outdoors and explore. Last night we headed a few feet outside to our backyard and had a mini campout. We armed ourselves with our blankets, chairs, “campout snacks” and had a great time watching a movie and an episode of Sid the Science Kid, under the stars.

We haven’t full blown out camped as a family and I think this was the perfect first step in moving to full fledged camping under the stars. We love watching Sid the Science Kid at home and are excited to watch the  premiere of Sid’s Backyard Campout episode on June 20th on PBS Kids. Sid’s Backyard Campout episode features Sid, his dad and his friend Gerald camping out in their backyard. In typical fashion Sid asks many questions about the outdoors. Sid’s Dad love sharing his knowledge about the outdoors and how much fun there is to be had. It is a great episode and we can’t wait to watch again.

Here is a clip from Sid’s Backyard Campout Episode

We had a great time with our backyard campout  and it was such an easy and fun activity. We used the IGo’s Pocket Projector,  which allowed us to watch the movie outside on our house!  We made a few of Sid’s favorite snacks popcorn, a few drinks and made some great memories. The kiddos still can’t stop talking about it.

Some of the Snacks we made were inspired by Sid the Science Kid’s Backyard Recipes. Our favorite was The PBS – Peanut Butter S’mores. We cheated and made it over the grill but it would be perfect bonfire treat!  Here is the simple and fun recipe.

Ingredients:

  • Graham Crackers
  • Marshmallows
  • Peanut Butter Cups
  1. Using a long fork or a clean stick, toast a marshmallow over the fire until golden brown.
  2. Cut the graham crackers into squares and place one peanut butter cup between the two squares.
  3. When the marshmallow is finished toasting, sandwich in between the graham cracker and peanut butter cups (we used Reese’s, so delish!)
  4. Press together for a few seconds to ensure the peanut butter cups melts.

After we finished watching we played some fun backyard games, told stories and counted stars. It was simple but yet one of the best times we’ve had as a family.  If you don’t have a projector, you can easily take your laptop or Ipad outside to watch movies.. It was so fun, I can’t wait to participate in National Backyard Campout Day when we pull out a tent and sleep under the stars. It should be so fun. Almost forgot, Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow to PBS Kids to Watch Sid’s Backyard Campout.

Disclosure: This was not a compensated post. I did receive a viewing kit for review purposes.
