Orange County Model Engineers- Free Train Rides the 3rd weekend of the month.

If you are looking for something fun to do with the kiddos that won’t cost you a penny and provide plenty of fun, check out the Orange County Model Engineers public train rides. Public ride days are the highlight for the club. They are conducted on the 3rd Saturday and Sunday of each month from 10 am until 3:30 pm. The club has a variety of engines and riding cars. Trains on public ride days are made up of 5 to 6 bench cars that seat 5 to 6 adults and children. Rides are free however, donations are welcome and help with the upkeep of the railroad.

A typical trip takes about 12 minutes and covers two loops of the park. Bridges and terrain variations are just part of the scenery as is the back end of the Costa Mesa Golf Course.

When my boys were little this was a favorite outing. The BEST birthday party we ever did was there – you can "rent" it just for your group and ride to your hearts content. We brought our Thomas track and trains for the depot area too. It was only like $100, but that was several years ago. Adults got just as big of a kick from the whole thing too.

The Orange County Model Engineers' Goat Hill Junction is great! As a heads up, the December public weekend includes a stop at the "North Pole" where you can meet Mr and Mrs Santa, and get your picture taken with them (bring a camera or buy one taken by them and printed on the spot).

This place is a hidden gem. Thanks for publicizing it. They do have a cute gift shop that I've found a couple of unique items at.

    Love your blog!

I finally made it out to this place, and my kids loved it!
My girls are 8 & 10, and my son is 2 1/2…and he's now getting into trains. He was asleep when we arrived and he usually wakes up cranky, not this time.
As we walked up to get in line, he got the biggest smile on his face! Thank you so much for your suggestions of things to do. The best part was that it didn't cost too much for us to go on it twice.
We made a donation which helped me out alot…gotta feed them kids afterwards.
    We're going next month too.
    Thanks again!
