Passing on Healthy Oral Habits to our Kiddos!

Brush, Brush and more brushing!

Growing up my family  didn’t visit the dentist often. I would brush my teeth twice a day (my mom always made sure of that) and flossed, but we really didn’t do much else when it came to our oral health unless there was a problem.  The Hispanic Dental Association, in partnership, with P&G recently conducted a study and according to the survey almost two-thirds  of Hispanics rate their overall oral health care as “excellent” or “or good” yet two-thirds of those surveyed experienced at least one oral health issue in the past year. As a Latina,  I have to be honest and admit that I didn’t find this surprising basing it on my own experience. I think  the problem lies in information. I think the Latino community needs access to more information about good oral health care and most importantly, how to pass on healthy oral habits to our familias! This got me thinking, How have you introduced healthy oral habits in children?

This question  got me thinking about how I approach healthy oral care habits in our home. I  remind my kiddos  in the morning and bedtime to brush their teeth and they know the importance of visiting the dentist. However, I really wanted to get some pointers from a  dental professional and decided to call my sister-in-law, Katie, a dental hygienist, to give me her top three tips when it comes to developing oral habits in young children.

1. Let your kiddos do it themselves. Katie, suggested to allow your children to brush their teeth first. Then mom and dad can over and brush the hard to reach places or missed spots. You can make it fun by suggesting my turn, now your turn!

2. Visiting the dentist early. Children should have their first visit at around 2 or 3 year old. My sister in law  also suggested  early exposure to the dentist. Take  the kiddos with you to your biannual dental visits. I did that with my kiddos and It’s been a piece of cake when their turn came around. They love feeling important and doing what mom an dad do. A visit to the dentist became something to look forward to because they get a fun toothbrush and a toy. I think it also helps that Aunt Katie is a dental hygienist.

3. Limiting sweets and brushing at least twice a day. This one is sometimes hard to do in our home. I think this one might be tough for many of us. No matter what time of day it seems the kiddos are always asking for some kind of sweet treat. I try to limit the amount and if I succumb to their pleading(I’m a pushover!) I make sure that they brush their teeth immediately after. We brush our teeth twice a day minimum but I would love to have them brush three times a day.

Big Bear Lake – Snow Play Along the Way

This is a repost from last year but with rainy days in our future and Thanksgiving weekend almost here, I thought I would share my snow play tips for Big Bear along the way. My family loves Big Bear Lake. My in laws have a vacation home in Big Bear Lake and we visit a few times of year during the winter months. We love visiting and playing in the snow for hours. It is the perfect daytrip and there are so many fun places to visit , play and make special memories with the family. This post is all about having fun in the snow and not paying a penny to do so.

One of the best things to do when heading to Big Bear is to pull over and find a good spot to partake in good old fashioned snow play. There are my great spots to pull over on the way to Big Bear.  We usually head to Big Bear along Hwy 38 or the “back way” as many locals call it. It is a pretty smooth ride and not windy. We usually  Orange Ave exit 10 fwy in Redlands when heading east. We make a left turn on Orange, go for a few blocks to Mentone Blvd and make a right.  Mentone Blvd is Hwy 38 and you will take that road all the way up to Big Bear.

One of the first great places to stop off along the way is  Whispering Pines  Nature Trial just past Angeles Oaks.  There is some parking and plenty of room for romping in the snow.  You can also park alonside the road. The second spot is between mile 26 and mile 27. It doesn’t really have a name but it is right past Whispering Pines and you can’t miss it. There is plenty of open space and not many trees. A perfect place to sled and for a good snowball fight.  The area surrounding the Greystone Amphiteater is also a great place for snow play. Just pull off the side of the road and be prepared for some fun.

Make sure to check for weather and road conditions.  You are  required to bring chains with you in the winter when traveling to Big Bear. We always bring ours  but have yet to use them since we have a four wheel drive vehicle with a snow setting. If there is weather or ice be prepared for a bit of a long ride up.  It just depends on the weather. For up to the minute weather reports  and  road conditions head here. Have fun!

It’s the 2nd day of review/giveway of Disney interactive games and today I want to write about Lego Pirates of the Caribbean Video Game. This super fun game is a favorite of both of my kids. I would actually say that it’s my kiddos absolute favorite game. They both love both the Pirates of the Caribbean movie and being the little Disney Geeks that they are, the ride at Disneyland.

This very entertaining game is a huge hit at home. It’s very easy to play and it is guaranteed to be a hit in almost every home, combining both Legos and Disney. I’m telling you my kiddos LOVE this game! Two players can join in on the gaming action and the kiddos can build stuff, break stuff and also find stuff. You won’t hear any “I’m bored or this game is too hard” with this game. It’s fun for the entire family!

The game is a combination of all four films and the kiddos can be their favorite Pirates of the Caribbean game. Captain Jack Sparrow is definitely a favorite character to be played at our house along with Davy Jones. It really is a very entertaining game for both young and old.
